Campaigning to protect the best of architecture and design after 1914

Casework is the Society’s core activity. We provide support and advice to architects and planning authorities to protect the best twentieth century architecture and design, whether through listing or sympathetic development and management. Our work aims to highlight the importance of forgotten (and sometimes controversial) 20th century buildings to our architectural heritage: anything from a phone box to a power station, from a 1920s private house to a 1970s shopping centre. Follow the links on the left for details of the wide range of casework and listings we deal with.

Statutory role for C20 listed buildings

Local planning authorities have to consult us when listed 20th century buildings in England are threatened with demolition, and many also seek our advice on proposed alterations. Many important buildings of our period are not yet listed, and much of our casework involves making well-researched and detailed arguments to English Heritage. Although not a statutory consultee in Wales or Scotland, we also put forward cases for listing to CADW or Historic Scotland. Our office caseworkers are supported by a committee of experts who meet monthly.

Proposing a building for listing

Many important cases have been brought to our attention by members of the public, so if you know of a post-1914 building that’s under threat or that you think should be listed, please get in touch.

It helps if you can supply as much detail as possible, including

  • Information about the building’s history: when and why it was built and who the architect was
  • Details of the current threat, whether alteration, demolition or simply neglect
  • Recent photographs of the building
  • A location map.

Read more information on listing in our Research section.

Email us with the details at caseworker(at) , call us on 020 7250 3857, or write to The Twentieth Century Society, 70 Cowcross Street, London EC1M 6EJ.

You can find more about how a building gets listed on the English Heritage website at
