Casework – campaigning to protect the best of architecture and design after 1914 – is the Society’s core activity.  We work to highlight the importance of forgotten (and sometimes controversial) 20th century buildings to our architectural heritage:  anything from a phone box to a power station, from a 1920s private house to a 1970s shopping centre. Follow the links below to get a flavour of the wide range of cases we deal with.

Press Releases
The Twentieth Century Society campaigns for all styles of buildings of the twentieth century. Our archive of press releases can be read here.

Local planning authorities have to consult us when listed 20th century buildings are threatened with demolition, and many also seek our advice on proposed alterations.  But many important buildings of our period are not yet listed, and much of our casework involves making well-researched and detailed arguments to English Heritage, CADW or Historic Scotland that they should be.  Our publications and our programme of walks, tours and lectures raise awareness of important architects and buildings, as well as helping to fund our work. Our office caseworkers are supported by a committee of experts who meet monthly.

Many of our most important cases have been brought to our attention by members of the public, so if you know of a post-1914 building that’s under threat or that you think should be listed, please get in touch. It helps if you can supply as much detail as possible, including

- Any information you have about the building’s history: when and why it was built and who the architect was
- Details of the current threat, whether alteration, demolition or simply neglect
- Recent photographs of the building
- A location map.

Email us with the details at caseworker(at)c20society.org.uk , call us on 020 7250 3857, or write to The Twentieth Century Society, 70 Cowcross Street, London EC1M 6EJ.

You can find more about how a building gets listed on the English Heritage website at www.english-heritage.org.uk/server/show/nav.1373.
