Turned Down

Post & Mail Building, Birmingham; John Madin & Partners, 1963-5, not listed

Was turned down by the DCMS on the grounds that it was looked at in 1997. EH recommended then that the building did not meet the standard for such large scale commercial buildings, as exemplified by the Millbank Tower. They were particularly concerned with the junction of the tower and podium and the unglazed print block. They also felt that the detailing was not of high enough quality on a national scale to meet listing criteria. We have supplied further evidence and we believe the case has been re-opened (see our building of the month feature)

Shackleton Hall, The Vale, Birmingham University, H T Cadbury-Brown, 1961-5

Droitwich Spa Lido, Brine Baths Park, Worcs.; T.H. Mawson, 1930's, unlisted

Turned down by the DCMS for being too modest.

Haddo House, Highgate Rd, N5, Robert Bailie, 1959-6
