Kingsway Health Centre listed as rare example of 1930s architecture

The Twentieth Century Society is extremely pleased that Kingsway Health Centre in Widnes, Cheshire, has been listed by English Heritage as a well-preserved example of a 1930’s health centre. In their assessment, English Heritage praised the Moderne style building for its striking design – which features fine Art Deco elements inside and out, including a stunning Vitrolite tiled stairway.

Designed by local architect Austen T Parrot and opened shortly before the outbreak of WWII in 1939, the building served the Widnes area as a health centre until its closure in 2006.

The Society put the building forward for listing after local campaigners informed us it had closed down and were worried for its survival.  Whatever its future, we are now confident that the best elements of this impressive building will be preserved for future generations. Listing recognises buildings of national significance and this is an important listing for a building that had served its locality for over 70 years.
