National News: The C20 Society celebrates its 25th anniversary

Founded in 1979 as the Thirties Society, the Twentieth Century Society has now spent twenty-five years campaigning for post-1914 architecture and design. This is certainly a something to celebrate. The Society will be do so by staging a series of events which highlight our most important cases and buildings currently at risk.

Buildings at Risk website

In co-operation with the London Architecture Biennale in Clerkenwell we are setting up a new website available from June. The site will feature 25 buildings across the UK under threat of being demolished, severely altered, or that are decaying. These case studies will offer historic as well as up-to-date information, and contrast photographs of the buildings in their former glory and current state. Featured structures will include the modernist housing block Embassy Court in Brighton, the Tricorn Centre in Portsmouth, and the former fire station, Milton Court, in London's Barbican. Via the website we aim to attract interest and action for these buildings so that they will last and have a brighter future.

A press launch for the new website, coupled with a talk by Paul Zara, Conran and Partners, on the restoration of Embassy Court, will take place at 1pm on Monday 20 June, in the courtyard, 70 Cowcross Street, London .

Photography exhibition

Between 19-28 June the Society is staging an exhibition of Sarah Duncan's photographs of buildings at risk. The exhibition, which will take place in the Farmiloes building on St John Street, London, is intended to serve as an introduction to the material covered by the forthcoming website.
