Sydenham & Forest Hill foray
Saturday 12 March 2005 , 1.30pm

A half-day walk finding some surprises among the principally Victorian suburbs of this part of south London. We shall be looking at two splendid modernist houses by Robert Atkinson and Tecton, an art deco block of flats by Bertram Carter, houses by Edward D. Mills and flats by Frederick Gibberd. We will visit McMorran & Whitby’s Lammas Green and some interesting post-war school buildings by Basil Spence, Michael Manser and Peter Moro. There will also be a visit to the award-winning extension to the Horniman Museum by Allies and Morrison and a glimpse of a well regarded old people’s home by Neylan & Ungless. We conclude the walk at a refurbished grade II listed art deco cinema by J. Stanley Beard, where Lewisham’s cinema expert will be on hand to describe the work. Access has been arranged to several of the properties, including Lammas Green, Taymount Grange and the Robert Atkinson house.

The tour will be led by member Sue Grindlay. It is entirely on foot and will involve walking up some quite steep hills. The return will be from Forest Hill station and you will need a zone three railcard.

Meet: outside Sydenham Station at 1.30pm

Cost: members only £14
