Glorious Golden Lane
Monday 4 & Tuesday 5 August, 6.30pm
The Corporation of London’s Golden Lane Estate was won in a celebrated competition of 1951 and Peter (‘Jo’) Chamberlin, Geoffry Powell and Christophe Bon formed the practice to build it. Their later, much larger, Barbican estate next door is perhaps better known but Golden Lane was one of the brightest and most publicised housing schemes in post-war Britain. It has stood the test of time remarkably well and can be seen as the model for many recent schemes: a high-density urban microcosm with housing and a range of community facilities side by side. Our visits, led by GLE residents Roland Jeffery and Paul Lincoln, will include period film footage and (we hope) the roof garden. We will see inside several flats and maisonettes to explore the variety of layouts. Since GLE flats are compact in size the visit will be limited to 20 but we will run the same event on two consecutive evenings. If you have a preferred date, please state which; otherwise we will allocate to fill both groups. This is the second repeat of an over-subscribed visit. The event will finish around 8.45pm.
Meet: Outside Barbican Underground at 6.30pm
Cost: Members only, but members may bring one guest. £10 members and £12 guests—per person including refreshments.
