Salford
Saturday 23 August, 10.30am

We shall be joined by Joe Martin, Salford’s Conservation Officer, to see what Salford has to offer. In truth Salford isn’t overflowing with fine c20th buildings but a couple of things it does have are pretty unique and well worth a look. Barton Aerodrome (recently renamed City Airport Manchester) was Britain’s first municipal airfield and has a listed Control Tower and Hangar from 1933. The former Mines Rescue Station from 1933 by Bradshaw Gass and Hope is also listed and although altered is one of only a handful such buildings surviving. Salford Quays is a prime example of urban regeneration and fans of overbearing PoMo offices will be happy. Those who aren’t fans may find relief in the outstanding Lowry Centre by Michael Wilford from 2000 and the Dock Office by Harry Fairhurst and Son from 1925. We may also visit the Municipal Buildings from 1937 by Percy Thomas and across the road is the Library and Lancastrian Hall from 1968 by Leach Rhodes and Walker which Pevsner describes as ‘Large, ugly, of concrete’—which makes it a must-see I think!

Meet: Manchester Piccadilly Station, 10.30 am
Cost: Members only, £30
