Waverley and the Thames Forts
Saturday 11 October, 9.45am
This is a great opportunity to see the World War II Maunsell Sea Forts in the Thames Estuary. Abandoned in the late 1950s, these strange structures were re-inhabited for a brief period between 1964-67, to be used as pirate radio stations. We will travel on the Waverley, the last surviving Clyde paddle steamer, dating from 1947 and a war-damage replacement for an earlier LNER Clyde paddle-steamer sunk at Dunkirk. The trip will be led by Gavin Stamp and promises to be a unique experience– it is an all day trip, not returning until around 8.00pm, and we start by going under Tower Bridge—which opens for us. There is no architecture other than the forts (apart from what is visible along the river)—the boat stops in Southend, but the voyage should be a convivial (and bibulous) experience.
Meet: London Tower pier at 9.45am
Cost: Members only, £37 and £35 for seniors
