Wirral Wanders
Saturday 21 June, 10.45am
Liverpool is Europe’s joint capital of culture in 2008 (with Stavanger, Norway) and we cross the Mersey, through the 1933/4 tunnel, to explore the Wirral peninsula, where many of Merseyside’s middle classes enjoy a comfortable lifestyle. We start in Pacific Road, Birkenhead, for the popular view of the Three Graces from Rowse’s thrilling brick ventilation tower and thence to Port Sunlight to explore its C20 interest. We’re very fortunate to visit J Roy Parker’s 1970s house at 1 Ingestre Road, Oxton. We’ve been lucky to be granted access to Wallasey’s GII Solar Campus (Emslie Morgan, 1961)—one of the earliest and most successful passive solar-energy buildings in the world. Woodchurch Estate, Grange Hill memorial by Jagger, Rivacre prefabs and ‘Whitegates’, Willaston, are on the itinerary plus more. This promises to be an action-packed day led by Graham Fisher with Peter de Figueiredo.
Meet: Liverpool Lime Street station at 10.45, after the arrival of the 7.15 from Euston. (London members need to carefully check times on the West Coast Main Line). We aim to finish by 6pm. Why not consider staying overnight in Liverpool and taking in some of the City of Culture events and exhibitions?
Cost: Members only, £30
