Wolverhampton 2—Walsall 1
Saturday 30 August, 10.30am
This day, led again by Andy Foster and Ian McInnes, will expand on last year’s visit to Wolverhampton, this time visiting the eastern part of the city to see, amongst other things, post-war churches by local architects Lavender & Twentyman, Lyons Israel & Elsom’s competition winning Bilston Community Centre from 1938 and an Edwardian Garden Suburb with houses by Randall Wells, Detmar Blow and Basil Stallybrass. We will stop for refreshments at The Vine in Wednesfield—an unaltered, listed, public house of 1938 by Watkins and Maddox of Burslem. According to the list description “this pub stands out as an exceptional (possibly unique) complete example of a small pub interior of the inter-war period”. In Walsall visits will include Walsall Art Gallery by Caruso St John and Allford Hall Monaghan Morris’s bus station plus Geoffrey Jellicoe’s Churchill Hill Memorial Gardens and some 1960s surprises such as the local law courts and the technical college.
Meet: to be confirmed but probably Wolverhampton station, 10.30am
Cost: Members only, £30
