Listings report, Spring 2002

The following buildings have been added to the Statutory List by the DCMS:

Grove Gardens, 125 Park Road, Westminster, London: Farrell and Grimshaw, 1968-70, II

Queen Mary School, Lytham St Annes, Lancs: Thomas T Rees & Richard Holt, 1930, II

The following buildings have been turned down for listing by the DCMS:

Post & Mail Building, Birmingham; John Madin & Partners, 1963-5, not listed
Was turned down by the DCMS on the grounds that it was looked at in 1997. EH recommended then that the building did not meet the standard for such large scale commercial buildings, as exemplified by the Millbank Tower. They were particularly concerned with the junction of the tower and podium and the unglazed print block. They also felt that the detailing was not of high enough quality on a national scale to meet listing criteria. We have supplied further evidence and we believe the case has been re-opened (see our building of the month feature)

Shackleton Hall, The Vale, Birmingham University, H T Cadbury-Brown, 1961-5

Droitwich Spa Lido, Brine Baths Park, Worcs.; T.H. Mawson, 1930's,
unlisted. Turned down by the DCMS for being too modest.

Haddo House, Highgate Rd, N5, Robert Bailie, 1959-6

We have put forward the following buildings for spot-listing:

Former Ripon College Chapel, Ripon Training College, North Yorks: WW Chapman of Woodroffe, Buchanan & Coulter, 1963
We have put forward for spot-listing this hyper-paraboloid church. The site has been sold for redevelopment and the chapel is under imminent demolition threat.

Hilsea Lido, Portsmouth, City architect Adrien J Sharp, 1935

Art Deco Factory, 606 Purley Way (A23), Surrey

Cattle Market, St. Oswalds Road, Gloucester, Gloucestershire; J.V. Wall with A.J. Ault (City Architects' Department), 1955
This concrete, barrel vaulted, covered market is up for demolition.

Friern Barnet Town Hall, Friern Barnet Lane, N11; Sir John Brown & Henson, 1937
Plans are afoot to sell the building; we have been asked to support a spot-listing request.

Draper’s Gardens, London EC2, R. Seifert and Partners, 1966
Put forward for spot-listing, the owners have applied for a Certificate of Immunity.

Alpha Tower, Birmingham, George Marsh for R. Seifert and Partners, 1972-4
Listing case; the owners have also applied for a Certificate of Immunity.

Bentley Wood, Harland, E Sussex, S Chermayeff, 1936-8
After some uncertainty about its listing status, it was realised that it was indeed not, hence it was rushed to the DCMS for listing.

The following have been upgraded:

Pen Pits, Penselwood, Somerset: PJB Harland, 1935, II
Success! Upgraded to II*

Permission granted to demolish listed buildings:

Liberty Shoe Factory, Eastern Boulevard, Leicester, H H Thomson, 1918-19, listed Grade II
