Listings report, Summer 2002
The following buildings have been
added to the Statutory List by the DCMS:
Friern Barnet Town Hall, Sir John
Brown and AE Henson,1939-41
Spot-listed Grade II. Little altered, it is a good example
of pared-down modernism, showing clear European influences,
but executed in traditional materials and techniques.
NCP Car Park, Lex Garage, 32-36 Brewer
Street, Westminster, London, Robert Sharp and James
Joass, 1929. Spot-listed Grade II. Among the earliest
surviving ramped multi-storey car-parks to be built
in the country. Its monumental street presence endows
it with considerable power.
Tyler's Cottage, 50 Oakhill Rd, Sevenoaks,
H Baillie Scott, 1937
Spot-listed Grade II. An excellent example of a private
dwelling in late Arts and Crafts style. Amazingly there
is already an application to de-list.
We have supported the following buildings
for inclusion in the Statutory List:
London Fire Headquarters, Albert Embankment,
London, EP Wheeler for the LCC, 1934
UGC Cinema, formerly Carlton Cinema,
Haymarket, London, Frank Verity and Samuel Beverley,1926-7
We have proposed the following building
for inclusion in the Statutory List:
Stillness, Lodge Road, LB Bromley,
1934, RG Booth. An intact suburban private house in
the moderne style.
Young Vic Theatre, London SE1, Howell,
Killick, Partridge and Amis, 1970. This theatre was
built as a temporary structure and is currently being
redesigned to improve its facilities, but maintaining
the auditorium.
School of Engineering and Science,
University of Westminster, Lyons, Israel and Ellis,
1968 (see casework report)
Brunel University, Lecture Hall Block,
Hillingdon, Middlesex, Sheppard Robson & Partners,1965-7
(see casework report)
The following buildings have been
turned down for listing by the DCMS:
Post & Mail Building, Birmingham;
John Madin & Partners, 1963-5
DCMS thought it not of high enough quality to merit
listing.
South Bay Pool, Scarborough: Turned
down by the DCMS and EH as 'this lido and changing rooms
do not make for a unified single design'.
Cattle Market, St. Oswalds Road, Gloucester,
Gloucestershire; J.V. Wall with A.J. Ault (City Architect'
Department), 1955 Viewed as being a good example of
a very typical piece of construction for its day, but
not unique, hence it was not deemed worthy of listing.
The following building has been upgraded:
Creak Vean, Feock, Cornwall: Team
4, 1964-7 Success! Upgraded to II*.
