Listed

Queensgate Market, Huddersfield, Yorkshire; Seymour Harris, 1970, II
A building long threatened with demolition by Kirklees Council. With reliefs and sculpture by German émigré Fritz Steller. Interior with mushroom shaped concrete columns which hold up stepped roof sections.

Library and Art Gallery, Huddersfield, Yorkshire; EH Asburner with GH Rowledge, 1937, II
Equally threatened by municipal redevelopment plans this monumental stone building is now hopefully safe.

Scotstoun House, South Queensferry, Scotland; Peter Foggo, 1965, Category B
Built as the Scottish HQ for Arup Associates for whom Foggo worked. Still occupied by Arups and in good shape. One storey block on rectangular plan with Miesian appeal. Wall elements formed of pre-fabricated concrete panels which embrace full height windows.

Put Forward

St Augustine’s RC Church, Ormond Street, Manchester; Desmond Williams and Associates, 1967-68
Well detailed brick box with richly decorated interior, featuring sculptures by Robert Brumby. Top lit, very atmospheric and well preserved throughout.

Renold Building, UMIST, Manchester; Arthur Gibbon of Cruickshank and Seward, 1966
Multi storey lecture block at the heart of Manchester’s UMIST campus. Features a large abstract mural by Victor Pasmore on the ground floor. Sculptural freestanding staircase and fully glazed stairtower make this a very elegant education building.

Westminster Kingsway College, Grays Inn Road/Sidmouth Street, Camden, London; GLC and ILEA, 1950s, 1974
Interesting sculptural brutalist corner block with more restrained 1950s block and assembly building on Sidmouth Street. Camden plans to demolish and rebuild.

Ironmonger Row Baths, Islington, London; KMB Cross and AWS Cross, 1931,1938
Built in two phases the baths include Turkish Baths as well as a 30m pool with spectators’ gallery. Original fittings remain in parts of the building.

County Hall, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex; J Stuart with Vincent Harris, 1929-38
The building was begun in Victorian times but the inter-war spaces are grandest and feature inter alia a richly decorated Council Chamber with large murals.

The Studio, Upper Court Road, Wokingham, Surrey; Elie Mayorcas, 1938
Highly unusual inter-war building, almost post modern in feel. The pitched roof building looks very American with weatherboard siding and a deck but also has modernist features such as the three linearly aligned porthole windows.

Supported

Handsome Scandinavian inspired brick building built for training rail staff. Constructivist murals by Denis Dunlop, large paintings in foyer and dining room by Norman Wilkinson. Under threat of demolition.

Streamlined modernist school building constructed around a 1911 building. Well proportioned façades and original staircase remain. Under threat of redevelopment.

Landmark in central Glasgow with well sculpted façades.

Mendelsohnian, extremely elegant and beautifully preserved department store; an iconic modernist building.

Borthwick Wharf, Deptford, Greenwich, London; Sir Edwin Cooper, 1934
Impressive brick box with good detailing, threatened with residential replacement scheme. Since turned down.

Church of the Epiphany, Elizabeth Street, Corby, Northamptonshire, DF Martin-Smith, 1961-62
Well preserved and interesting example of the post-war architecture of the new town development in Corby. The clerestorey lighting is highly effective giving the impression that the folded star shaped metal clad roof actually floats above alter.
